Enhanced revascularization of the ischemic limb by angiogenic therapy.
BACKGROUND This study tests the efficacy of an angiogenic growth factor, endothelial cell growth factor, in a rabbit model of persistent hindlimb ischemia. METHODS AND RESULTS Ischemia was induced in the left hindlimb of 22 New Zealand White rabbits by ligation of the distal external iliac artery and complete excision of the common and superficial femoral arteries. Two groups of animals were ...
متن کاملTIE2-expressing monocytes/macrophages regulate revascularization of the ischemic limb
A third of patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) will eventually require limb amputation. Therapeutic neovascularization using unselected mononuclear cells to salvage ischemic limbs has produced modest results. The TIE2-expressing monocytes/macrophages (TEMs) are a myeloid cell subset known to be highly angiogenic in tumours. This study aimed to examine the kinetics of TEMs in patients wit...
متن کاملUpper Limb Ischemic Gangrene as a Complication of Hemodialysis Access
Upper limb ischemia is a well-recognized complication of dialysis access creation but progression to gangrene is uncommon. We report a case of upper limb ischemic gangrene and discuss the lessons learned during the management of this case. Clinicians must be vigilant for this complication and they should be reminded that it requires urgent management to prevent tissue loss.
متن کاملSuccessful revascularization of near total amputation of the upper limb at the sultan qaboos hospital, salalah.
Severe crush injuries to the upper limb may require a formal amputation with devastating consequences to the patient. We report a patient with a near total amputation at the level of mid-forearm who underwent revascularization and salvage of his hand. The operative details of this case are described. It is the first time that such a patient has been treated successfully by plastic surgeons and ...
متن کاملBilateral Upper Limb Remote Ischemic Preconditioning Improves Anaerobic Power
Purpose: Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has been used to protect myocardial cells against ischemiareperfusion injury and is recently utilized for improving exercise performance. It is unknown whether remote IPC (RIPC) to tissues not involved in exercise can induce similar exercise improvements and what “dose” of IPC is necessary to induce exercise performance benefits. This study determined if ...
